The village of Bella Bella can be found on the east coast of Campbell Island, in the Central Coast region of British Columbia. Just 180 kilometers north of Port Hardy and 145 kilometers west of Bella Coola, this vibrant community is the largest on the Central Coast north of Queen Charlotte Strait. About the Opportunity

The Hailika’as Heiltsuk Health Centre has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Health Director based in Bella Bella, BC.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, you will play a pivotal role in leading and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Health Centre, ensuring high standards of community health service delivery, financial stewardship, and organizational integrity.

In this position, you will be primarily responsible for providing strategic leadership, managing staff and resources, and ensuring the delivery of culturally respectful and effective health care services to the Bella Bella community.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Implementing Board priorities, strategic plans, and health care programs in alignment with community needs
  • Leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of health care delivery plans and budgets
  • Building and maintaining relationships with First Nations Health Authority, government bodies, and funding partners
  • Overseeing financial management and ensuring compliance with funding requirements and reporting obligations
  • Ensuring compliance with privacy, security, and information management policies as the designated Privacy Officer
  • Fostering a positive, transparent, and culturally sensitive workplace environment
  • Acting as a key community liaison, encouraging health education, engagement, and continuous improvement initiatives

About You

To qualify, you will need a graduate degree in a health-related discipline or administration, along with 10+ years of progressive experience in healthcare management, ideally with experience in Indigenous communities. A combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.

The following are required:

  • Ability to undergo and provide a criminal record and vulnerable sector check
  • Hold a valid driver’s license
  • Willingness and ability to travel as required by the organization
  • Understanding of and ability to live in a remote community

The following skills are essential to success in this role:

  • Proven business leadership experience in healthcare or not-for-profit sectors
  • Knowledge of health care systems and Indigenous health funding models, including policies from FNHA, Health Canada, ISC, and Vancouver Coastal Health
  • Understanding of budgeting principles and financial management, including program funding structures and reporting requirements
  • Current knowledge of WorkSafe BC, Employment Standards, and Workplace Rights
  • Ability to build and sustain relationships with First Nations communities, regulatory authorities, and funding partners
  • Experience in leading, mentoring, and empowering teams to achieve organizational goals and foster a positive workplace culture
  • Proven ability to manage sensitive information and maintain confidentiality in all aspects of leadership
  • Commitment to promoting professionalism, a respectful work environment, and cultural awareness
  • Strong employee relations expertise, capable of navigating conflict resolution
  • Capacity to work collaboratively while balancing strategic oversight with hands-on leadership

About the Benefits

Upon joining us, you will be rewarded with a highly competitive starting salary of $95,000 - $125,000, with compensation negotiable based on experience.
