ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITYMethanex is currently seeking a full-time Process Safety Engineer to join the team in Medicine Hat, AB.
The Process Safety Engineer leads and maintains a program of continual improvement in Process Safety Management (PSM) and Loss Prevention for the Methanex Medicine Hat site. This position implements and revises management systems through the application of recognized standards and best practices. The role also develops and oversees compliance with the risk management philosophy of the site, conducts risk assessments and provides advice on operational procedures, design, and maintenance of the plant, related to the PSM program.
More specifically, your responsibilities will include:
- Track and trend site PSM key performance indicators to ensure on-time reporting to management, and early identification of potential issues
- Develop and maintain knowledge of catastrophic industry incidents with the purpose of applying lessons learned to the local site
- Maintain awareness of catastrophic threats facing Methanex facilities
- Prepare and deliver PSM awareness training for site personnel and contractors
- Monitor additions or changes to applicable codes and standards, ensuring any resultant site changes follow the Management of Change process
- Participate in projects with the Technical department to ensure effective application of process safety management principles in regard to plant design and operation
- Participate in risk analysis for a variety of operational and project challenges, including systematically assessing site risk exposures utilizing established risk analysis methods, conducting follow up of open actions and ensuring actions are closed out and documented
- Conduct quantitative risk assessment calculations for different risk assessment studies required for the site
- Promote the implementation of projects and initiatives related to process safety management and loss prevention based on legislative requirements, company initiatives, internal or external incident investigations and insurance recommendations
- Participate in and lead internal process safety audits and investigations, conduct follow up of open actions, and ensure actions are closed out and documented
- Support other site departments with process safety requirements, as requested
- Actively participate as a member of the Methanex Global Loss Prevention Team, developing global strategy and policy regarding loss prevention and PSM
- Support plant shutdowns and turnarounds with a focus on PSM
In order to qualify for this role, you will need at least 5 years of engineering experience in a petrochemical facility or similar industrial environment, with direct experience in the discipline of process safety. You must also have a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline and a Professional Engineer (P. Eng) designation through the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
Additionally, the following skills and experience will be strong attributes:
- Continuing education in PSM and Loss Prevention including but not limited to root cause investigation, process hazard analysis (e.g. HAZOP), and quantitative risk assessments (asset)
- Knowledge of international norms, standards and best practices related to process safety management and loss prevention
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office S and relevant industry-related computer software
- Superior analysis, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, including a strong ability to recognize and identify inconsistencies
- Sound judgment demonstrated by an ability to make valuable decisions and recommendations based on a mixture of analysis, wisdom, and experience
- Excellent presentation, facilitation, written and verbal communication, and active listening skills, demonstrated by a proven ability to effectively communicate with and positively influence a diverse range of individuals and audiences
- Extremely organized and detail oriented with strong time management, prioritization and planning skills, demonstrated through a consistent ability to manage multiple, competing priorities and demands
