Western Crop Innovations (WCI), established in 1973 as the Field Crop Development Centre and reimagined as a not-for-profit organization in 2024, stands at the forefront of agricultural advancement, not only in Alberta but across Western Canada. Based in beautiful Lacombe, Alberta, WCI specializes in the development of feed and forage barley, malting barley, and triticale varieties, each tailored for optimal performance in Western Canadian climates. Our robust operations include a 400-acre central research facility and over 40,000 test plots spread across the province. About the OpportunityWCI is looking for a full-time Executive Director based in Lacombe, AB. Reporting to the WCI Board, you will lead and inspire a newly established organization, driving WCI’s Strategic Plan and building on the foundation set by the board. Your strategic and operational leadership will advance knowledge and technology, strengthening Alberta’s crop-based livestock feed and food production. You will guide research and innovation efforts within a large crop science research group, manage resources, and cultivate industry collaborations, with a key focus on developing market-ready barley and triticale varieties to enhance agricultural competitiveness. More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Leading WCI’s strategic vision and building on the progress made by the interim board to drive growth and impact
- Providing strong financial oversight, including budgeting, capital planning, and securing long-term funding through government relations and stakeholder engagement
- Developing and maintaining partnerships with government agencies, industry, producer organizations, and key stakeholders to strengthen WCI’s presence and influence
- Overseeing research initiatives with a focus on plant breeding and variety development, ensuring alignment with industry and funding opportunities
- Driving operational efficiencies and continuous improvement efforts, ensuring the research and development programs remain innovative and competitive
- Managing and mentoring staff, fostering a collaborative environment that enhances team performance and engagement
- Representing WCI at industry events, funding discussions, and regulatory engagements, ensuring WCI remains a leader in the agricultural research space

About YouTo qualify, you will need 5+ years of senior management experience in the agriculture industry, including working with a Board of Directors, overseeing financial operations, and managing teams, along with a Bachelor of Science in a related field.
The following are also required:
- A valid driver's license
- Ability to clear background checks
- Willingness and ability to travel as needed
- Commitment to being on-site in the Lacombe area, with relocation expected for candidates outside the region
The following skills and experience will be strong attributes:
- Strong financial oversight, including budgeting, capital planning, resource allocation, and securing external funding
- Proven ability to build partnerships and engage stakeholders, acting as the face of WCI in industry, government, research, and funding discussions
- Experience in government relations, particularly in funding acquisition, regulatory compliance, and advocacy
- Familiarity with agricultural research, including plant breeding, agronomy, crop feedstock supply chains, and scientific methodologies to support the research team
- Understanding of policy development and regulatory processes, particularly in seed breeding and variety registration
- Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor staff
- Experience in a non-profit, research institution, or industry association setting (asset)
- A relevant graduate degree or MBA (asset)
