About the Opportunity

We are looking for a full-time Supervisor of Roads to join our organization in High River, AB.

Reporting to the Manager, Public Works, this position is responsible for the administrative and leadership needs of the Roads business unit. You will oversee the planning, implementation, and daily operations of the Roads team, including the maintenance of roadways, alleys, concrete infrastructure, traffic control devices, snow and ice control, parking lots, pathways, and overland drainage. Additionally, you will assist with inspections of Town-owned infrastructure and manage special events and projects. As the Supervisor, you will ensure customer service objectives are met and initiatives align with community needs.

You will inspire your team to take ownership, contribute to organizational goals, and build effective teams through open communication and collaboration, while fostering a service-centric approach.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead, coach, and support direct reports while fostering a work environment aligned with organizational values and culture
  • Oversee hiring, training, supervision, evaluation, and performance management of direct reports
  • Set and communicate employee performance expectations in collaboration with the Manager
  • Promote teamwork and collaboration within the business unit and across the organization
  • Ensure excellence in customer service for both internal and external stakeholders
  • Champion the Town’s Health and Safety program, ensuring adherence to safety practices, training, and maintaining compliance with policies and regulations
  • Collaborate with the Manager and Health and Safety Division to develop and implement new and revised safety practices
  • Develop and implement short- and long-term goals for the business unit, aligned with divisional priorities and the strategic vision
  • Oversee the annual roads budget, monitor expenses, and manage assigned capital projects, including pursuing available grants
  • Provide reports and recommendations for capital planning, maintenance, upgrades, and improvements to senior leadership
  • Contribute to the strategic direction of the Public Works Division
  • Allocate resources effectively to prioritize tasks and optimize productivity
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and statistics relevant to the role
  • Ensure high-quality, safe service delivery through the development of maintenance programs, procedures, and processes
  • Inspect facilities and recommend the purchase of new equipment and trucks as needed
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and government regulations
  • Coordinate with other departments on work requests, special events, and inspections
  • Engage and oversee contractors, maintaining constructive relationships
  • Provide division coverage and support in the Manager's absence, as assigned
About You

To qualify, you must have a high school diploma and at least 5 years of relevant experience in construction, public works, roads and maintenance, and safety. Proven leadership skills, with the ability to manage a large team is essential. A valid Class 5 Alberta driver's license is also required.

The following will be critical to successfully performing this role: 

  • Canadian Public Works Association Supervisory Level 2, or equivalent experience
  • Valid Class 3Q Alberta Driver’s license is considered an asset
  • Must possess Standard First Aid, CPR Level C/AED, WHIMS, Fall Arrest, and Trenching, or the ability to obtain
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand maps and blueprints
  • Significant knowledge of the practices, procedures, and principles used in all aspects of asphalt roadways, municipal concrete program, overland drainage, traffic control devices, street sweeping, road markings, and snow and ice control
  • Project management skills and experience
  • Experience in policy and/or business process development
  • Canadian Public Works Association Level 3 is considered an asset

You excel at managing multiple tasks and projects, with a keen ability to prioritize and remain composed under pressure. With a strong mechanical aptitude and excellent problem-solving abilities, you approach challenges with confidence and skill. You proactively research and apply industry best practices, ensuring that standards remain current and effective. Additionally, you demonstrate sound judgment and the ability to work independently, efficiently completing tasks from initiation to completion.
