About the Opportunity
Our growing Calgary office is looking to add 2 capable and hardworking Engineer-in-Trainings (EIT) to our Land Development and Local Government teams who provide quality service to our land development, municipal and Indigenous clients across Alberta. Municipal engineering and land development are an integral part of our practice at Urban Systems. In this role, you will benefit from the support of industry professionals while working on exciting and challenging projects that make a visible difference in many communities. Assisting in the planning, design, and consultation on several projects, you will be given as much freedom and responsibility as you demonstrate you are able to handle; what you put in, is what you will get out of this opportunity.

- Honing your civil engineering skills and developing an understanding of best practices in a practical, real world setting of Southern/Central Alberta.
- Applying theory and providing workable solutions related to the implementation of municipal infrastructure including roads, water, sanitary, and drainage infrastructure design and planning.
- Establishing relationships with communities and act as the clients' representative on-site during construction to gather information, conduct inspections, and ensure that designs are built to specifications.
- Providing accurate and timely input and summarize technical reports, plans, studies, proposals, and presentations.
- Assisting project managers with cost estimating, quantity take offs, contract preparation and administration, project coordination, construction management, and report preparation for civil infrastructure related to community development.
- Exploring creative and sustainable solutions together with our clients to build vibrant communities.
- Demonstrating a commitment to learning through the ongoing achievement of personal and professional goals.
- Employing cutting-edge technologies and programs to carry out design and modeling assignments.
- Attending project meetings, collaborating closely with clients, contractors, external consultants, and internal team members whilst listening, communicating, and developing consulting and project documentation skills.
Work Experience Timeline
Throughout your time as an EIT, it is our goal that you experience multiple aspects of Civil Engineering. This includes but is not limited to construction inspection, contract administration, design work and report development. As such, below is a rough timeline that we have utilized to engage past EITs to achieve this goal:
Timeframe Tasks
May 2025 EIT Launch
May 2025 – November 2025 Onsite field inspection and introduction to contract administration.
November 2025 – August 2026 Continued onsite field inspection, introduction to in-office design work, report development, and project coordination.
August 2026 – November 2026 Onsite field inspection, contract administration, and project coordination. Support with report development, and continued design work based on project needs and timelines.
November 2026 and Beyond Begin to focus skills and contribution in preferred practice areas such as design, construction and/or project management while rounding out experience in varied consulting and engineering opportunities.
About You
This opportunity is well suited to recent graduates from a Civil or Environmental Engineering degree program, with up to 3 years of experience. The skills, strengths, and interests that will help you succeed here include:

- You are available to travel throughout Southern Alberta for project-related work and have a valid class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.
- You have registered, are in the process of registering, or are eligible to register as an Engineer-in-Training with APEGA.
- You have a keen interest and, ideally, work experience in a wide range of civil infrastructure construction and design projects.
